Coop Switzerland has received the Compassion in World Farming’s (CWF) Good Rabbit Award for its commendable practice in rabbit farming.
The Swiss supermarket chain is the first large-scale retailer in the world to receive the certification, which has been achieved in collaboration with Kani-Swiss.
The company’s rabbits live in open-air, free-range conditions, while the majority of rabbits farmed elsewhere ‘never see the light of day’, a company press release said. Coop Switzerland’s rabbits live with their natural families until they are farmed.
“We are very proud to present this award to Coop,” said the CWF’s director of food business. “It provides due recognition for it and the work it has done with Kani-Swiss to put into practice the best and most respectable conditions for raising rabbits.
“Notably, Coop has developed a system whereby the animals have a proper amount of roaming space, have contact with other rabbits, and sources of diversion.”
