DalterFood Group Earns Supply Chain Certification For Animal Welfare

DalterFood Group's cheese factories at Canossa and Cigarello have acquired supply chain certification for animal welfare.

The voluntary certification is in accordance with the protocol set by the CReNBA, the Italian National Reference Centre for Animal Welfare.

Assessment handbooks for dairy cattle welfare produced by the CReNBA form the reference document in Italy, in the absence of a European animal welfare standard.

The certificates are awarded to farms that pass an exam covering four macro-areas of business: company and staff management, facilities and equipment, living conditions of animals at livestock farms, and biosafety.

The certification is not just restricted to milk collection and involves all players in the production chain of the famous Emilian cheese.

Alberto Viappiani, the CEO of DalterFood Group, said, “Animal welfare certification is an important recognition and adds value to our farmers’ work, without whom we would have never been able to achieve this result.

"At the same time, this certification also rewards the hard work which our group has put into the supply chain, investing in cheese factories and human resources, with a truly unique approach in the PDO Parmigiano Reggiano sector.”

The dairy firm has also introduced digitised milk collection to its PDO Parmigiano Reggiano supply chain.

The Milk Trace app, an Andriod-based platform, traces milk collection from livestock farms to the Colline di Selvapiana e Canossa cheese factory and the Cigarello cheese factory.

Viappiani added, “Our digital system to manage the flow of milk collection through a mobile app is one of the most comprehensive and effective ones around, and means we have continuously up-to-date information in real-time."
