Spanish supermarket group Eroski has bought over 80% of the first catch of bonito in Gipuzkoa, Spain this year, the company said.
The purchase was made as part of Eroski's fresh produce strategy.
Last season, Spanish retailer purchased some 295 tons of bonito, accounting for €1.8 million. This represented a growth of 28% compared to the previous period.
Recently Eroski undertook a commitment with the Basque Government to boost the local food industry, including increasing it purchasing of bonito, anchovies and verdel.
Similar to mackerel or tuna, bonito is considered a delicacy in the north of Spain.
