The first supermarket in Germany to sell food that has passed its best before date exclusively has opened in Cologne. The shop is the third of its kind in the EU.
The Good Food outlet offers a range of salvaged fresh produce and branded non-perishables past their ‘best before’ or ‘sell by’ date. The shop considers these dates a suggestion, rather than a cut-off point after which a product becomes inedible or a risk to one's health.
In addition to challenging the rulebook on what constitutes food waste, The Good Food shop is also trendsetting in its ‘pay what you like’ policy, leaving it up to customers to decide on a fair price for the products.
"No one wants to throw food away," the shop's manager, Nicole Klaski told Deutsche Welle. "We salvage the vegetables and the expired products, and the producers are glad that their food is not wasted."
