In France, the Centre national interprofessionnel de l’économie laitière (CNIEL), a body representing producers of dairy products, has denounced price wars in the country.
The affiliation claims that price wars in large-scale retail have had devastating consequences for the French dairy industry.
Producers, the CNIEL has asserted, have found themselves in a highly precarious position because of effective exploitation, and the threat of it. It also claims that because of tight profit margins, there is no room to innovate, invest or maintain steady employment.
The president of the CNIEL, Thierry Roquefeuil, stated, "The haemorrhage must stop. Our profession demands that our contracts are respected. We demand that abusive practices be stopped at once, and this will be to everyone's benefit."
