Home Bargains Owner T.J. Morris Secures Carcraft Approval

Home Bargains owner TJ Morris has been granted permission to convert a former dealership next to its UK headquarters into a new staff training centre and two retail units.

One of the UK's fastest growing discount retailers, Home Bargains says: "We aim to offer the lowest prices in the UK on top quality, branded goods".

TJ Morris currently operates over 370 stores across the UK and offers shoppers leading brands across the categories of grocery, household, home and gardening.

The 115,000 sq ft site contains the Carcraft hypermarket, which closed last year. It is undersood that the site would be used for a Home Bargains training centre and two bulky goods retail outlets. The existing training centre will be converted to office space.

The expansion plans would bring significant economic and wider regeneration benefits to the Liverpool area, stated the report by the city's planning officers.

The news follows on from last year's opening of the retailer's new distribution centre at Solstice Park near Amesbury in Wiltshire.

Established by Tom Morris in 1976, the site at Solstice Park will enable the value retailer to expand its business significantly in the south.

McLaren was appointed to construct the warehouse unit along with a retail store and staff training centre in Amesbury. The unit was designed with a wave-effect roof to improve aesthetics and soften its appearance in keeping with the surrounding countryside.

The high bay area provides capacity for 46,000 of the total 61,000 pallets the centre can hold. The high bay racks are served by computer-controlled cranes that both store product and replenish the pallets during live picking.

The low bay store contains conventional wide-aisle racking, allowing goods to be loaded using conventional fork reach trucks driven by operatives. McLaren also installed the chilled food storage area, service yard and car park.

The value retailer plans to have over 500 stores in operation by 2018.
