Italy posted a trade surplus with the rest of the world of €5.013 billion ($5.44 billion) in December, compared with €2.786 billion in the same month in 2018, data showed on Friday.
Exports rose 4.2% year-on-year, while imports declined 2.2%, national statistics office ISTAT reported.
With European Union countries, Italy registered a December trade deficit of €748 million, compared with €1.319 billion in December 2018.
Exports to EU nations in December were up 3.4% year-on-year, while imports increased 0.3%.
In 2019, Italy posted a global trade surplus of 52.940 billion euros compared with €39.280 billion in 2018.
