Logistics firm Dachser has announced that it will start using longer trucks between its facilities in Ostrava and Brno, in the Czech Republic, increasing capacity on the route and reducing the number of journeys required.
The trucks, which have capacity for 104 pallets in two semi-trailers, will increase capacity on the route by 40%, and Dachser will use two longer trucks on a day-by-day basis, rather than three conventional ones.
Government Decision
The move follows the Czech government's recent decision to permit longer truck combinations.
Following the new legislation, trailer trucks in the Czech Republic are limited to a maximum length of 25.25 metres, and a maximum weight of 48 metric tonnes.
In addition, routes have to meet certain requirements to receive approval: they must consist mainly of motorways, cannot cross railroad tracks, and the distance between the loading/unloading points and access to the nearest motorway must not exceed ten kilometres.
Dachser already uses longer trucks in Germany, Sweden, and Spain, however their deployment is limited by regulations that vary from country-to-country, and in many cases do not permit use across borders, the company said.
