Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced plans to develop what it describes as a new ‘intelligent logistics’ facility in Zaragoza.
The retailer has acquired a 17,000 square metre site on which to build the facility, which will be located at the Plaza business park in the Spanish city.
Together with an existing facility already in operation at Plaza, this now brings Mercadona’s capacity at the site to 67,000 square metres.
Expanded Capacity
The retailer plans to invest around €6.5 million in developing a ‘smart’ warehouse that will both expand the retailer’s logistics capacity, and also alleviate existing time and capacity pressures at the site.
The new facility is expected to open in 2020.
With the new facility, the logistics capacity of Mercadona now exceeds 970,000 square metres.
The business has said that with its expanding logistics network, the business will seek to supply its supermarkets with more product, while also reducing its environmental footprint. It has invested more than €700 million in the optimisation of its logistics network.
