Metro Group has announced plans to build a new logistics centre in Kirchheim an der Weinstraße, in the south west of Germany, for its Cash & Carry wholesale stores and Real hypermarkets in the region.
The company says it will invest a double-digit million euro amount into developing the site, which is expects to employ over 380 staff.
The centre will represent an important element of Metro Group’s new logistics strategy to modernise its operations in Germany, which it announced in September 2015.
Mark Frese, Metro AG’s Chief Financial Officer, commented, "The realization of this state of the art logistics centre in Kirchheim represents a first, decisive step in the implementation of the new logistics strategy.
"By investing into a modern logistics network we support and strengthen the transformation of our sales lines Metro Cash & Carry and Real in Germany."
Metro says it chose the location in Kirchheim from a list of ten potential properties, as it is the perfect size for the development, has favourable lease conditions, and being on Germany’s A6 motorway, offers good accessibility.
Jobs at the new logistics centre will initially be offered to Metro employees already working at its centres in Bingen, Gernsheim and Gimbsheim.
