Nestlé has announced that it has joined the ‘One Planet Business for Biodiversity’ (OP2B) coalition, launched at the UN Climate Action Summit.
Over the past decade, an increased focus on meeting the needs of a growing population has resulted in the loss of diversity in agriculture and diets and degraded the ecosystem.
The coalition aims to take 'bold action' in protecting and restoring biodiversity, Nestlé said
'Safeguard Food Production'
Nestlé CEO, Mark Schneider, commented, "Nestlé believes that protecting and restoring biodiversity is essential to safeguard food production and food security now and for the future.
"Nestlé has for many years worked with farmers to manage their land sustainably and will continue to lead activities enhancing biodiversity."
Focus Areas
The coalition has identified three focus areas which will guide its functioning.
These include scaling up regenerative agriculture practices to protect soil health; using product portfolios to boost biodiversity in the cultivation of ingredients and increase the resilience of the food and agriculture systems.
It will also work towards eliminating deforestation, enhancing the management, restoration, and protection of high-value ecosystems.
The company has also intensified its activities with farmers to ensure the responsible sourcing of raw materials and has made significant progress towards its zero-deforestation goals.
It will scale up initiatives in agriculture to transform its value chains through land restoration, replanting trees, and enhancing biodiversity, the company said in a statement.
