German retailer Netto Marken-Discount, a subsidiary of Edeka, has unveiled a new €34 million logistics centre in Krefeld, with which it hopes to service around 150 supermarkets. The new centre, which took 11 months to complete, is 120,000 square feet in size, and uses voice-activated picking technology to prepare pallets for store delivery. The new development has created 170 jobs, 150 of which were filled via a training scheme for unemployed workers which was established by a local employment agency. (21 July)
