Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan cheese), together with Grana Padano, are the most stolen product in Italian Supermarkets, with percentage of thefts that is triple the average.
Overall, €2.95 billion worth of goods disappeared from Italian supermarkets in 2015, representing 1 per cent of total turnover.
The National Federation of Italian Farmers (Coldiretti) has also denounced thefts of cheeses from factories and warehouses, which it says are organized by gangs that choose the best cheeses to resell on the black market.
Coldiretti warns that these criminal activities also cause collapses in market prices to the detriment of producers, who are currently facing a serious crisis that threatens the future of the prestigious cheeses.
