Italy’s Parmigiano Cheese Consortium plans to invest €5.8 million in international promotion in 2017 – an increase of €1.6 million on 2016.
An additional €12 million will be invested for promotional activities in its home market, representing an annual increase of 35%.
According to the director of Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano, Riccardo Deserti, these investments aim to support the 5.1% increase in Parmigiano cheese production in 2016, and the 3.6% increase in the first quarter of 2017.
The leading producer of Parmigiano cheese in Italy, the Granterre-Parmareggio Group, reported a turnover of €325 million in 2016 (+11% year on year) and a net profit of €7 million.
Volumes and sales were both up in Italy and abroad for the Modena-based group, reports local daily Gazetta di Modena.
Parmareggio-branded products had an exceptional performance, with sales exceeding €143 million (+14%), with a 9% growth in volume, thanks to grated cheese, snacks and butter. The highlight in 2016 came from the snack product ABC, with over 20 million packs sold.
