Pepsico Foundation Puts $10 Million Towards Improving Recycling Practices In The US

The PepsiCo Foundation has announced it is to donate $10 million to American non-profit The Recycling Partnership in order to improve recycling standards in the US.

The foundation for the food and beverage giant says that it is joining up with the non-profit as part of its 'All In On Recycling' challenge, which aims to raise $25 million in total donations from leading businesses and organisations.

Half Of Material From U.S. Household Lost, Never Recycled

According to the foundation, currently half the material that could be recycled from US households is 'lost'.

This is due to various factors such as lack of infrastructure, widely varying municipal recycling programs, and low awareness of proper recycling practices.

The 'All In On Recycling' challenge aims to capture 1.9 million tons of recyclable materials over the next five years, including seven billion bottles and cans.

According to the foundation, this would result in a total greenhouse gas avoidance of 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 which would equate to removing more than one million cars off the road for a year.

Largest Ever Environmental Initiative At PepsiCo

Speaking about the partnership, Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo said, "I've always believed corporations do not operate in a vacuum – we have responsibilities to the communities we serve.

"Our collaboration with The Recycling Partnership represents a major step toward fulfilling those responsibilities by helping reverse the decline in recycling rates for aluminium and many common plastics. I hope other corporations across our industry and beyond will join us and commit to being All In On Recycling."

Half of the collected funding for the challenge is to go to various investments in infrastructure, while the other half will support education programmes.

The move is the biggest environmental initiative ever for PepsiCo and falls in line with its 2025 goal of designing a 100% of its packaging to be recyclable, compostable or, biodegradable.
