Portugal is launching a new seal to allow for easier recognition of national coffee brands, while giving them improved access to international markets.
"Portuguese Coffee – blends of stories" is the tagline on the new seal that, from now on, all Portuguese coffee brands, i.e. roasting companies operating in Portugal, may include on their packaging.
According to the Coffee Industry and Commerce Association (AICC), this initiative was designed to meet the sector's need for “a brand or unifying element that allows for the differentiation of Portuguese expresso coffee from expresso drinks from other countries”.
For exporters, the label "will provide a guarantee of their coffee, guaranteed by an independent body, thus contributing to the acceleration of the competitiveness of domestic companies abroad," emphasizes the AICC.
The value of Portuguese coffee exports increased 11 per cent last year to €63 million, the highest figure in the last 10 years, with the volume of exports growing 4.15 per cent to 11,800 tonnes, according to data released by the industry association.
