Finland's Raisio Group has announced that its newly built bioenergy plant at its main production facility has transformed the area into a carbon neutral zone.
The maker of Benecol invested approximately €8.5 million into the bioenergy plant, located in Raisio, Finland.
Raisio’s interim CEO Jarmo Puputti said, “Raisio aims to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy whenever it is ecologically and economically viable. To have our own bioenergy plant is a major step towards more sustainable food production. With the new plant, Raisio’s industrial area is carbon neutral.”
Automated Production
The new plant uses two to three truckloads of wood chips daily and all material used is acquired within a 100 kilometre radius of Raisio. The annual output of the new plant is about 50 gigawatt-hours.
The plant works off a high level of automation, and Raisio reports that the employment effect of transporting and collecting wood chips at the beginning of the supply chain is ‘considerably higher than that of the plant itself’.
“Responsibly made products increasingly interest consumers and our customers. We promote the sustainable food chain, for example by making responsible choices in our raw material procurement and by improving energy and material efficiency. With our own bioenergy plant, we can reduce the carbon footprint of products made in Raisio,” added Puputti.
