Vanilla prices have surged after a cyclone hit Madagascar earlier this year, disrupting production, according to the Financial Times.
As a consequence, the ice cream trade is struggling. With vanilla prices increasing tenfold, several producers have had to raise their prices or remove the classic flavour from their menus.
Madagascar is the world's main producer of vanilla, which is why the disruption has had such an effect on global prices, reaching a peak of $600 per kg.
However, the sharp rise in prices is having positive effects on the local farmers in Madagascar.
