Spar Austria Increases Range Of Responsibly Sourced Fish

Spar Austria caught and bred 97% of its 457 fish products in a responsible manner this year, according to the WWF.

The retailer made a commitment in 2011 to only stock responsibly sourced fish products in its stores, and the entire range is evaluated annually by the WWF.

“This is the best result since the introduction of the Spar fish buying policy in 2011,” said WWF marine biologist Axel Hein, underlining that the outcome has been driven by the cooperation between fisheries, the WWF and Spar.

Since the introduction of the commitment, all fish counters in Interspar hypermarkets and Spar Gourmet stores have delivered MSC-certified fresh fish, caught in accordance with standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council.

Each Interspar outlet offers fish from local fisheries or breeders, while Spar sells fish from special WWF programmes.
