The Spar team in Gran Canarias celebrated its 30th anniversary last weekend, along with the opening of its expanded distribution centre, the retailer announced.
The €10 million investment in the new 14,000 metre-square space (an increased capacity of 120%) and new operational systems for the 35,000 metre-square warehouse in the distribution centre will help the group grow in the future, Spar said.
It also allows for the additional stocking of 3,700 new SKUs. New bells and whistles include a dynamic gravitational order picking system, 17 new loading bays, 12,500 new pallet rack slots, and a new hoist system. The enhanced distribution hub has already cut costs and improved efficiency, the company said.
At the launch, president of SPAR Gran Canaria Ángel Media said: "The challenge for the new generation will be to continue working for Gran Canaria for many more years, building on the great family business we have developed with confidence, passion and warmth reflected in everything we do."
Local government and industry representatives also attended the launch. The chancellor for Industry, Commerce and Craftsmanship of the island, Minerva Alsono, lauded the commitment of the team to local sourcing, environmental initiatives, and supporting the economy.
