Aldi Süd has been given the Energy Management Award by the Association of the European Heating Industry (EHI) for the efficient use of energy at its supermarkets.
It is the second time the retailer has won this distinction, receiving the first award in 2008. Aldi Süd has been working on their concepts of heat recovery and efficient lightning since 2005.
The award honours measures such as the use of photovoltaic solar panels on many stores and the introduction of innovative refrigeration systems, as well as a complex energy management system. There is also a feedback system which notifies employees of increased energy consumption.
Aldi Süd's aim is to get every store in Germany climate neutral by the beginning of 2017 - distinctly earlier than planned.
