Discounter Aldi Süd is the first company in the German grocery sector to receive the 'Lean & Green Star', an award for sustainable logistics.
Aldi Süd reduced greenhouse emissions in its supply chain by 20% between 2012 and 2015, which is two years faster than required for the award. An inspection of its operations was executed by TÜV Nord.
The main area of improvement was the expansion of Aldi Süd's warehouses. Storage of products from various suppliers is now possible within one warehouse, which lowers fuel consumption and reduces transportation kilometers.
Another initiative is to use vehicles with three different temperature zones, as well as offering training to drivers to drive in a more environmentally-friendly manner.
Within the past year, Aldi Süd was able to save 111,353 tons of CO2 by using eco-friendly refrigerants and expanding renewable energies.
