Auchan Retail Portugal has partnered with the ‘Too Good To Go’ application to combat food waste, reports suggest.
The Almada Forum Auchan store will be the first in the group to sell its food surplus via the app, while other stores in the country will join subsequently.
App users can buy 'Magic Boxes' for €3.99 per unit, and pick them up at service counters.
For now, the retailer will offer 10 'Magic Boxes' with yoghurts, cheeses, ham, bread, snacks, cold meals, sandwiches and juices.
The partnership with ‘Too Good To Go’ is the latest in a series of initiatives launched by the retailer in Portugal to fight food waste.
Other Initiatives
The retailer offers products approaching their expiration dates at reduced prices. It also sells blemished fruit and vegetables in its 'self-discount' segment.
In 2018, the retailer collaborated with various associations to donate food surplus worth around €2.3 million.
The ‘Too Good To Go’ app was launched in Portugal in October of last year and is available for Android and iOS users in the Lisbon area.
A similar app, FairMeals, was launched in Portugal in 2018, which allows restaurants and bakeries to sell excess production at discounts of 20-70%.
