Auchan Portugal Introduces Blockchain Technology To Trace Products

Auchan Retail Portugal has introduced blockchain technology to share information about the journey of products from farms to store shelves.

Lettuce, melons and watermelons are the first product categories to incorporate this technology.

The retailer aims to extend it to more products in the so-called 'controlled production line' by 2022, the retailer added.

Customers will be able to access information about all stages of production of products by scanning a QR code in the product label.

Quality Of Products

The initiative comes at a time when consumers are increasingly concerned about the quality of products and is in line with the company's policy to support and enhance local and national production.

According to José Cordeiro, the head for products, suppliers and branches at Auchan Retail Portugal, blockchain technology allows the registration of "data on a network in a safe way" and “brings great value in terms of food safety.”

In addition, this method increases the transparency of information provided to consumers.
