Carrefour Belgium has announced that it will now accept contactless payments using the Android Pay app, and that it is the first major retailer in the country to adopt the service.
Launched by Google in Belgium on 7 March, the app can now be used in almost 600 Carrefour stores, including hypermarkets, most Market stores, Easy, and Express stores. These formats were all previously enabled for the use of contactless Near Field Communications (NFC) technology.
'This makes life easier for customers as they pass even faster and more simply through the checkouts.
'Carrefour therefore immediately embraced the advantages that Android Pay provides for customers and enthusiastically adopted this modern and practical means of payment,' the company said in a statement.
Customers need to download the free app from the Google Play store, register any number of credit cards, and then unlock their smartphone when they arrive at the till. Then they just need to wave their phone close to the contactless payment device. Debit cards will be available for payment shortly, Carrefour said.
Customers can still receive all applicable Carrefour benefits, like discounts and Bonus Points.
