Carrefour Spain has introduced electronic coupons and ChequeAhorro receipts as part of its 'Papel 0' (paper-free) digitalisation strategy, in a move that will eventually reduce the use of paper in the company by 70%.
Users of the Mi Carrefour app can select the 'no paper' option and reduce paper waste from ChequeAhorro, which accumulates savings garnered from being a member of El Club Carrefour, and coupons. Instead, these items will appear automatically on the app.
Carrefour sent notifications to more than a million users of the app to inform them that they could choose the paperless option.
This was the retailer's first step towards its goal of eliminating paper receipts throughout the company.
The project is part of the global corporate social responsibility objective of Carrefour, implementing steps to help realise the circular economy. The company has also endeavoured to use more sustainable printing methods and efficient transport, as well as using digitalisation to move towards paper-free operations.
Carrefour operates 175 hypermarkets, 114 Carrefour Market supermarkets and 538 Carrefour Express supermarkets in Spain.
