Carrefour has installed an energy-efficient ‘innovative cabinet’ in its central office for the benefit of its staff – a decision which could be followed by larger-scale rollout of the Cooltech technology.
Instead of using refrigerant gas, the magnetic cooling system employs a water coolant, resulting in a halving of energy use. It also emits less noise than standard drinks fridges, and is reportedly more dependable.
Jean Michel Fleury, project director of international support for Carrefour, commented, “Our intention is now to test several magnetic refrigerated display cabinets in stores. In addition to the environmental performance with no gas emission, magnetic cooling will bring significant energy savings to our stores”.
