Italian regional retailer Coop Liguria will make it possible for customers to pay with smartphones, eliminating the need for cash, debit or credit cards.
The system will soon be rolled out at the Coop Liguria store in the L’Aquilone Shopping Mall in Genoa Bolzaneto. Mobile payments can be made at cashier-operated tills as well as automatic ones.
The retailer has selected the Mobysign mobile payment system, an app that does not connect to a specific telecom operator or bank, but can be used in other retail outlets and for other services, such as e-commerce.
After registering and entering their data on the Mobysign app, customers can pay by reading a QR code with their smartphone and confirming the purchase with their fingerprint or by entering a PIN.
If downloaded through the iCoop app, Mobysign will also entitle users to additional promotions launched by the retailer.
The project was officially presented at the recent Retail Forum in Milan.
