Dansk Supermarked Unveils 'Wupti' Web Portal

Denmark's Dansk Supermarked, which operates the Netto retail banner, has unveiled a new online marketplace, Wupti.com, with which the group will seek to go head to head with the likes of Alibaba and Amazon.

The concept behind Wupti is that it will offer a platform for online stores in Denmark to be grouped together, thus creating a broader range for consumers. It is also designed to combat the growing presence of foreign-owned online retailers operating in the Danish retail space.

"It is an ambitious and aggressive feature to prevent the continued flow of e-commerce across the border," said Dansk Supermarked's Kenneth Nielsen.

Growth Potential

Wupti is already among the top ten most visited Danish stores since its launch, says Dansk Supermarked, with expectations that the portal can become the most visited website in Denmark.

"There is no doubt that we have drawn inspiration from the likes of Amazon and Alibaba, which skilfully created online marketplaces," says Nielsen, "but we believe that there is room for a Danish marketplace as an alternative to foreign websites in very competitive market. We are creating a strong platform that is easy, safe and cheap to shop from, where we create the best conditions for both the vendor and the customer."

Dansk Supermarked does not currently offer grocery items through the Wupti portal.
