Frigomundo Coldstore, located in Zoeterwoude, The Netherlands, has unveiled a major sustainable energy project with the installation of the largest cold store solar panel system in the country.
This record-breaking 5,800 solar panel energy system is being installed on 10,500 square metres of roof, and has a capacity of 1,577 MWp, which produces 1,388 MWh every year. This would be enough to meet the average annual energy needs of 300 four-person family households.
Frigomundo uses around 2,915 MWh of energy a year, and the new solar panel installation will meet around 50% of this requirement.
When the cooling systems aren’t running, the excess power will go back into the local electricity grid. Construction is currently underway and the project is expected to be up and running by the end of May this year.
Sustainable Approach
Adriaan Figee, commercial director of Frigomundo, says, “We see a growing necessity towards CO2 neutral production chains. By making the storage part more sustainable, we positively influence the environmental impact of the total production chains of our clients. With our sustainable approach, we are convinced we have a competitive edge compared to other cold stores and we will attract clients with the same sustainable view of the future.”
