Jerónimo Martins has announce that it is to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources for its banners in Portugal, including Pingo Doce, Recheio, Hussel and Jeronymo.
The group said that the move comes as part of the group's Environmental Policy, which outlines the need to offset carbon dioxide emissions in its business.
Last year, the group produced around 190 thousand tonnes of CO2.
'Firm Commitment'
Commenting on the group's move to renewable electricity sources, Pedro Soares dos Santos, CEO and chairman of the board at Jerónimo Martins said that the decision "reflects the Group's firm commitment to sustainable growth, even when it means - as is the case - significantly higher costs.
"Climate change and the extreme weather events and natural disasters that come with it are three of the five major global risks identified by the World Economic Forum in 2018. We cannot just sit idly by. We must take action.”
