Jumbo Solar Power Project Among Largest In the Netherlands

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has announced the installation of 14,000 solar panels on the roofs of its headquarters and distribution centre in Veghel, the Netherlands, this year. The project ranks among the five largest solar energy projects carried out in the Netherlands so far.

Developed as part of a wider ‘climate plan’, the project was also inspired by research, carried out by a local advisory board of schoolchildren (‘Raad van Kinderen’), aged 11-13.

The 14,000 solar panels will have a production capacity of up to 2.19 million kWh per year; the amount of energy needed to power 730 households.

A further 910 panels are to be installed at Jumbo supermarkets in Almere, Winterswijk and Nijverdal this year; bringing the total number of stores which produce part of their energy needs to 13 this year.

"Jumbo wants to consume as little energy as possible and increase its use of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power. The installation of 14,000 solar panels at our headquarters and distribution centre in Veghel is an important step forward," said Colette Cloosterman-Van Eerd, director of formula and innovation, and co-owner of Jumbo Supermarkets.
