Sainsbury's will test new 'e-ink' price labels in some stores in order to cut down on paper usage as well as automatically update prices. The new technology will be rolled out on a trial basis in the Shoreditch Old Street Local store in east London, according to EPR Retail News.
The trial will give the retail group "some useful insight' before deciding whether or not to introduce it in all stores.
The aim of the new system is to reduce the amount of paper being used on price labels, which are frequently subject to change. The new system will change prices automatically via an encrypted server.
Jon Rudoe, the Director of Digital and Technology at Sainsbury’s, said: “A key part of our strategy is to make sure we’re looking at new technology on behalf of our colleagues to make their lives easier.
“So this trial will give us useful feedback about quicker, efficient digital pricing information and how much time and paper we’ll save in the process.”
Electronic shelf pricing has been available to retailers for a decade now but has never taken off despite some trials.
