SPAR Hungary has rolled out a new food waste prevention app, Munch, following a six-month pilot.
Munch, which is available via a dedicated app and a website, offers customers the opportunity to purchase products close to the end of their shelf life from SPAR and INTERSPAR outlets at a reduced price. Users reserve the selected package, pay online, and collect the goods in-store within a set time slot. Product categories include fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy products.
During the pilot, more than 26,000 packages were purchased, SPAR said, reducing the retailer's food waste by almost 26 tonnes.
Earlier this year, SPAR Hungary introduced several sustainability initiatives, including digital solutions to cut down paper consumption, the reduction of plastic film in logistics, and the in-store collection of waste cooking oil.
Sales Performance
SPAR Hungary reported a 15.6% year-on-year increase in retail sales to HUF 915.7 billion (€2.44 billion) in its financial year 2022.
The retailer attributed this growth, which is double what it achieved in 2021, to initiatives implemented by it to support affordable, fast, and convenient food shopping.
