New research by Searchmetrics has shown Tesco's impressive mobile-search efficacy, revealing that it is three times more present than rival Asda on Google searches on smartphones, TheDrum.com reports.
The research body studied the results of millions of words used in searches in order to arrive at 'mobile visibility' scores for UK supermarkets’ websites. Tesco proved to be the best-performing retailer, and over three times as visible as second-placed Asda. Sainsbury’s came in third, with Waitrose and Morrisons in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The chief technology officer and founder of Searchmetrics, Marcus Tober, commented, “Research suggests that people don’t always use mobile phones to make the final purchase, but they do use them heavily to research products ahead of making a purchase via a desktop or laptop or by visiting a store. In many cases, in-store customers might check product prices and offers on a competitive store website before making a purchase.
“So even if you are not selling through your website – as was the case in some of the supermarkets in our study – it could still be very important to have good visibility in mobile searches.”
