  • The first World Refrigeration Day was celebrated on 26 June. Trade associations and professional entities from the industry came together to set the date as an annual milestone.

It recently gained the support of the UN, marking the date as a part of the official international calendar of commemorative recognitions.

British researcher and refrigeration enthusiast Steve Gill had been suggesting, for more than a decade, to set a date for celebrating the day.

It is important to commemorate the day, as it acts as a reminder about how far the refrigeration industry has advanced in the last century on issues that are essential to the quality of life.

These include the adequate preservation of food and beverages, the storage of vaccines, and the transport of organs.

Efforts made by the sector have an impact on billions of lives, as the industry seeks to innovate for more comfort and efficiency with less impact on the environment.

    Embraco Sets An Example

Founded in the seventies, in the city of Joinville, in southern Brazil, Embraco is now a global reference that promotes quality of life through innovative solutions in refrigeration.

The company, with around 1,200 registered patents, annually invests between 3% and 4% of its net revenue in research and development.

It counts on 500 professionals dedicated to innovation, and more than 100 partners from reference engineering universities around the world.

It carries a portfolio dedicated to delivering high-efficiency refrigeration solutions in household segments, such as household applications with hermetic compressors for freezers, refrigerators, minibars, water filters, and other household products that require refrigeration.

In the commercial sphere, it offers a wide range of compressors and refrigeration solutions for convenience stores, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, and fast-food chains, as well as medical and scientific applications.

It also provides parts for distributors, retailers, and installers for the distribution and aftermarket segments.

With 47 research laboratories on four continents, the company boasts a competitive and innovative profile that is ahead of global refrigeration trends.

    Some of these trends include:

More space – Currently, one of the industry’s greatest challenges is to produce increasingly smaller compressors, which ensures more space inside the refrigerators.

Additionally, of course, it’s providing lighter and more efficient solutions, obtaining benefits with performance, logistics, and material optimisation.

Natural refrigerants – Research shows that, in retail, between 30% and 50% of total recorded energy use is consumed by refrigeration – in the food segment, this is one of the largest recorded fixed expenses.

Recent data has shown that the use of natural refrigerants delivers more efficient results while reducing their environmental impact.

Embraco is one of the market pioneers using these fluids in its solutions.

Reduced energy consumption – Variable speed compressors can ensure energy savings of up to 40%, compared to a conventional compressor (on-off), as well as lower noise and vibration.

In refrigerators, it’s known as Inverter technology. Once again, Embraco has been one of the pioneers in applying this solution since the end of the 1980s.

Available in several models of the portfolio, it’s worth mentioning the latest launch: the FMX model ensures benefits such as better food preservation due to lower temperature variation, along with the ability to operate with voltage fluctuations, which guarantees less risk of damage in the case of energy loss, for example.

High performance – Embraco is a reference for compressors that deliver high cooling potential, low power consumption, and minimal noise.

The juxtaposition of the Inverter full-motion technology with the use of natural refrigerants produces unprecedented results in refrigeration solutions.

In vertical refrigerators, common in supermarkets, for example, it’s possible to reach desired temperatures within 70% of the specified time, recording up to 33% in energy savings.
