A Dutch court has sentenced meat wholesaler Willy Selten to two and a half years in jail for trying to pass off horse meat as beef during the 2013 European meat scandal.
"As boss of two companies, he was guilty of forging invoices, labels and written declarations and using these forged documents to trade meat," the Den Bosch court said in its ruling.
Prosecutors stated in court papers that they found 33 examples of knowingly falsified accounts, where horse meat was passed off as beef. There were also instances where receipts were issued for meat deliveries that never took place.
The 2013 European meat scandal impacted almost all European countries from Ireland to Greece.
