UK retailer Asda has announced that it is testing an in-store charity clothing shop, Re-Loved, in its Milton Keynes store to encourage customers to reuse, repurpose or recycle their unwanted clothes.
Every year, around £140 million (€153.5 million) worth of clothes end up in landfills in the UK, data from the sustainability campaign group WRAP suggests.
The clothes collection in the pop-up shop comprises donated, second-hand garments from various brands, Asda said.
The pilot project, which commenced on 2 September, is scheduled to run for four weeks.
'Another Route For Unwanted Clothes'
Senior director for sustainable sourcing at George, Melanie Wilson, commented, "By trialling our Re-Loved pop-up shop, we hope to help create another route for unwanted clothes to find a new home and encourage people to think again about throwing away that top or those jeans they no longer love."
The proceeds from the sales in Re-Loved will be forwarded to Asda’s Tickled Pink campaign, which supports the charity Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now, the retailer said.
