UK retailer Waitrose has launched a new dessert for the Christmas season: a giant chocolate ‘sprout’ filled with profiteroles.
The new dessert has a green chocolate-dome shell – designed to look like a giant Brussels sprout – which, when drizzled with warm caramel sauce, melts to reveal 18 green profiteroles filled with a lime-flavour crème pâtissière (a thick and creamy custard).
The dessert, available at Waitrose stores since 13 December, has been developed by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, who has created a number of festive treats for the retailer, such as Citrus Sherbet Lazy Gin, and last year’s banana and bacon trifle.
Festive Fun
“Christmas is the perfect time of year to create a fun dessert, with lots of theatre for people to enjoy together,” said Aileen Wood, dessert buyer at Waitrose.
“We are sure this unique pud will be a talking point, and will give sprout-haters a chance to try a new take on the festive veg.”
This is not the retailer’s first unusual innovation involving sprouts this festive season. Earlier this month, Waitrose introduced a decorative sprout wreath, as well as a variety of purple sprouts.
